Mandatory paid sick leave in California rears its head again

In January, when California’s late and unlamented Governator was replaced by Governor Moonbeam, the sequel, I predicted that the legislature would pick up the pace on employment legislation.  And, indeed, that has happened.  One of the items that is getting legislators’ attention and effort is a proposed mandatory paid sick leave law that would apply to every California employer regardless of size.  (Employers with less than 10 employees would need to provide less time than bigger ones — five days as opposed to nine per year.)  The bill is Assembly Bill 400, sponsored by Fiona Ma, and is substantially the same as previously-defeated bills she has sponsored in prior years.

This year’s version has passed Assembly committees on Labor and Employment and the Judiciary.  We will keep you posted on its continued progress.
